Tottenham’s David Button became Chris Powell’s sixth signing of the summer on Tuesday afternoon.
The 23-year-old keeper has amassed 90 appearances during various loan spells at Bournemouth, Luton, Dagenham & Redbridge, Crewe, Shrewsbury, Plymouth, Leyton Orient, Doncaster and Barnsley.
Button has signed a two year deal at The Valley and the move throws John Sullivan’s future into doubt. Chris Powell was keen to secure a loan move to enable Sullivan to get regular game time.
The fact that the Addicks have brought in a keeper on a permanent basis suggests that Sullivan’s departure could also be of a similar nature. Powell had this to say after Button’s deal had been completed:
“We are really happy to bring David to the club, he’s someone we’ve been monitoring for quite some time and is a hugely talented young keeper who is a good age and boasts all the right attributes.
“He’s come through the ranks at Tottenham and also has played youth football internationally as well as playing for quite a few clubs on loan, including in the Championship.
“This represents a new chapter for him and it’s great that he feels it’s the right time to make this move and further develop here at The Valley.
“David will provide strong competition in the goalkeeping department and that can only benefit us going forward,” said the manager.
The latest batch of rumours suggest that Bolton have joined West Ham in chasing Chris Solly’s signature and that the Addicks have rejected Villa’s bid for Dale Stephens, believed to be in the region of £600,000.
